Eye on Technology: Google Wave

Have you ever felt as if technology is leaving you behind? That when you finally learn and understand something, you are frustrated by the fact that there is something else you have understand in order to move forward with the product you just learned to use? It is as if you will never complete the task of pushing the stone up the hill only to have it roll back down the hill.

I feel your pain.

If you are a business and have the budget for it, you have a Technology Consultant, or a Tech guy or women. If you are someone that is not a business person but, you are using technology enough to get done what you need to. Then, you probably have a friend that knows about this stuff and, you ask them the questions “How does this work?”, " Why is it not working?”Or “What can I do with this?” While it is nice to have someone around to answer these questions, they may not always be there and, like everyone else you need a resource to give you some direction or answers to your current technology dilemma.

This is the objective of this blog. To give you direction and that it be the resource you need and, can use.

As of now the internet has evolved into what is known as Web 2.0 One of the products I want to explore with you is something that I believe with change the Web and, how we interact with each other. This product is called Google Wave.

You might ask What the Heck is Google Wave? How will it affect me and, what I am doing?

These are good questions that we will attempt to answer.

Google Wave is a communication platform bringing together Chat, Instant Message, Forum, Wiki and, Email. Google Wave is a document (called the wave) that captures the conversation; it allows you to reply to the conversation, have private conversations between selected parties, invite others to the conversation. Those individuals that want to catch-up on what was said earlier will have the ability to find out through utilizing the obtaining the full history of that conversation. You will be able to communicate, share photos
, videos and, formatted text. This platform will allow you to have live conversations.

This new platform will allow for conversations to happen in “Real Time”.

Google Wave interacts with Wordpress, Drupal, and Joomla; if you are a web designer then you know what this means and how this technology may impact what you do and how you do it.
If this product works the way it is said to work, it will change things and, not just in the Technology world. From live collaboration to Natural language tools, to Social Gadgets, some of us will be in for a shock to the system.

Google is still a developers product but, September 30, 2009 Google Wave is available to a few invited individual much like Gmail in its infancy. The developer community and invited guest are testing this product as we speak
The Product Rollout to the General Public will happen sometime in 2010. Some and including this blogger say that this product maybe a change in the way things are done on the web.

There are six items within googlewave that lead me to believe that this product will change the web and how we communicate.

Wiki Style Function
GoogleWave allows you to change the message you may send to someone in this respect it works a lot like email but, you should be aware that you can also change the message of anyone within the wave (the current document); you can reorganize the conversation string and, reply to any part of the conversation string. This is called concurrent editing and, will allow individual within the conversation string to reply to, make changes to the same conversation much like you do if you were speaking face to face and, allow collaboration to happen much more easily because it is all in real time. Add video, and photos you have a real way to get things done. Whether is a planning of a birthday party to see who is coming, to working on research for a new product, to a possible live conversation with a political candidate? This changes things in a real way.

Wave Extensions
This Feature allows for 3rd parties to develop apps much like you see working with twitter or facebook. Also, if you involved in a project you will be able to utilize project management tools from within the Wave (Conversation). There are two types of extensions robots and gadgets, what I described earlier are calling a gadget. The robot is an automated smart conversation participant, which can detect keywords. They can respond to those keywords and bring in outside information from services like Friendfeed or Twitter. This feature will allow you to use Google wave as an All-in-one conversation tool.

Drag and drop file uploads
Documents can be quickly shared in the Google wave environment, simply by dragging the file from the desktop or file manager and dropping it in the conversation, photos are shown in an album format and music can be played. All these things are shared very quickly. Using this feature in a file sharing platform, with a project management tool or system. This will allow for the development of project management tool more powerful than anything on the market.

Wave Embeds
You able to place within a Website a Wave (conversation), to customize that site for many purposes. It will be easy to share conversations, and possibly chat rooms or how about changing the way you do customer service using this technology.

Playback
If you are added to the conversation late you are playing catch-up. This feature allows you to just do that Catch-up on what was said so that you can proceed to participate fully in the conversation. Someone can get caught up in a matter of minutes instead of hours, just playback the conversation.

Open source
This product is open sourced which means is this environment will foster innovation because developers will be able to, improve and make changes to code for quick adoption and develop a better product.

You may say this is all good but, if the public does like it because of too many bugs, problems, or causes too many major problems on the network, (enterprise or smaller) then, the product will be useless.

Is Google wave ready to be introduced to the world?

That is something we will all have to wait and see. I for one love the concept and will be watching and learning like everyone else.

I believe Google will be successful.

Excited About the New Google Chrome OS

I don't exactly know why I'm this excited but I am and I feel a bit silly for only writing about this now. On the 8th of July, Google formally announced that they will be launching a new project that should complement the successful release of Google Chrome: The Google Chrome Operating System. This is the company's new approach in an attempt to redefine user experience by showing the world how an OS should work and how it should be. I think what's great about this is that the Google Chrome OS is will be open source. I'm a really big GNU Linux fan and I've been running the thing for a few years, but my only problem with it was that it didn't run a lot of the programs that I wanted to run.
My excitement for the Google OS is that it can potentially run most of the popular file extensions and most games that can't run anywhere else but windows. The main foci of the new OS are to be fast, simple and secure. The company doesn't want it to be heavy on RAM so the design aims to be as simple as possible. It's sensitive to the internet browsing community so what it wants is to get you on the web in the fastest way possible and then get out of your way. The User Interface won't be bulky and troublesome and allows most of the action to take place online.
Just like the browser, the OS will be built to be safe from viruses, malware and security updates. What I believe to be its best feature is actually what I fear will be its most limiting feature. This is obviously its focus on the improvement and redefining of the user's internet experience. Because of this focus, it will allow all web-based applications to work automatically without the installation of whatever. Application developers will have an easier time when they can have an easier time working with online technology. The programs won't just be limited to the system, but it will also be available on Windows, Mac and GNU Linux.
What this tells me is that because this will cater to the internet user's market, it will have less capability to run programs that do not depend on the internet for functionality. I'm thinking if it can run a modeling program or a game like COD 4. Time will tell if my speculations will prove to be something worth considering but lot's of things can happen. Despite being targeted at netbooks, I think that several desktops all over the world will be running the open source OS or at least giving it a try. The OS simply screams simplicity. Users will have an easier time with their computers and they hopefully won't have trouble configuring settings or needing software updates and upgrades.

Google Wave - Email Step Aside

The two brothers who brought the world Google Earth have teamed up again to produce their next incredible Google service: Google Waves.
It will be released later in 2009 and will be the next huge improvement in communication.
Basically we communicate through email online and it is a series of messages from one person to another or others. Replies may happen or not and keeping meaningful track or attempting to collaborate with email is way too awkward.
Email was invented a long time ago, and not much has changed.
Google has decided to image how online communication would work if it were invented today instead of decades ago.
And, they have succeeded. Google Waves is a dazzling and easy-to-use collaboration tool. You open a thread and others can comment on any part of it. After a while the page may be littered with so many comments that it is hard to see what is happening. So, there is a 'playback' feature that allows you to start at the beginning and watch the history of the collaboration.
Many people can edit the same document and conflict resolutions is seamless.
Also, they are inviting programmers to create Applications in an Open Source way to allow the creativity of millions of programmers around the world to enhance Google Wave by already having many Applications already ready on its launch date.
Possibly the prettiest feature is online as-you-type translation between any two of forty languages. I've seen it in operation. As you type each character of your sentences, the computer senses the context and begins translating, one character at a time -- as fast as you can type. You can watch the words appear in any other language as you are hitting each keystroke. It's truly a huge advancement.

Google Wave

A few years ago, Google kidnapped all their best engineers and smuggled them into a little room filled with squillions of emails, tweets, live updates, events, virtual friends, requests, forums, searches, blogs, groups, irritating quizzes, fans, pages and rss feeds, along with some giant vats of Red Bull.
Google then instructed those engineers to think in terms of 'what would email look like if we invented it today?', and build a tool so mind-bogglingly new and gadgety that it would throw all other social mediums out of the water in one fell swoop.
Now those engineers have re-emerged - exhausted, relieved and with a massive sugar-hangover - to reveal their all-encompassing communication solution: Google Wave.
What is 'Google Wave'?
Google Wave is the name of their creation. The 'wave' itself is also an aspect of that creation. As one commentator put it, Google Wave is 'like email on crack'. The best way to describe it is to explain how you use it. You create a wave and add people to it. All the people you've added are then able to share text, pictures, gadgets and feeds from other places on the internet on the same wave page you created.
The moment you change something, all the other people on the wave can see that it has been changed. You can also see how your particular wave evolved from start to finish with Google Wave's 'playback' option. The same goes for Google Wave's integrated games.
When you create a message for your wave, for instance an invite to an event, all the people on your wave can go in and edit or add to that same message in real-time, rather than having to create their own, separate responses as you would do in an email or on Facebook. Talking about Facebook, you can receive updates (or 'waves' of updates) from Facebook and Twitter in your Google Wave inbox, making it a more integrated social system.
Essentially this is an exciting new kind of email which allows people to communicate and work together simultaneously on a live email/conversation document with richly formatted text, videos, maps, photos, games and more, and it might be about to revolutionise email.

What is Google Wave?

What is Google Wave?
Google Wave is a web application that lets you actively communicate and collaborate with other people. Google Wave enables user's to:
  • have conversations (instant messaging)
  • share photos and files
  • work with others on documents and files
  • chat in real time
  • organize your information
  • post to blogs
  • and a lot more
One of the basic feature sets in gWave is what they call "extensions". Extension peform a lot like plug-ins do for a Word Press blog. Google has a serious video vault containing very useful "how to" tutorials on each aspect of the gWave platform. The gWave Forum is also a great resource for getting up to speed on this evolving platform.
What information does Google collect and how is this information used?
When you use Google Wave, Google collects info about:
  • your account activity
  • your interaction with user interface elements and links
  • your IP address and other log information.
I will curious to see if OpenID or another open ID authentication service provider finds its way onto the Google Wave platform to further enhance the privacy and security of a gWave participant (especially) if gWave finds itself serving the Healthcare PHR | EHR space, which seems highly likely, given the momentum of the Google Health platform.
Can anyone else see your information in a Wave?
As a participant on a Wave, your gWave address, the name associated with that address, and other info that you opted to share with others is visible to all participants of that wave. If you select a picture (avatar) for your account, this will be visible to other Google Wave users.
Will Waves contain Adverts?
As of November 1, 2009, Google has no plans to include adverts, but they might consider doing so in the future. If they do decide to include adverts, they say they won't share your personal information with an advertiser without your consent, and they will update this privacy FAQ with the change.
How do you add more participants to a wave?
You can add more people to a Wave by in three simple steps:
  1. Open the Wave to which you'd like to add more participants.
  2. At the top of the wave, click (+) to select the participant(s) you'd like to include.
  3. Select from your contacts list the participants you'd like to add to the wave.
Since not many people have a Google Wave account just yet, I've found it easier to simply send my friends, fans and business associates an email (via gmail) a quick note so they are already in my contact list. If someone already has a gWave account, then you simply select them from the left panel, via the Contact section.
Google Wave is in beta testing phase, so its by invitation only to become a Google Wave user (aka) gWaver
How and where can someone get a Google Wave invitation?
There are a number ways to do this. I simply visited the gWave site, provided my Google creds and filled out a simple form. Three weeks later, I got an invitation from Google and have been digging it ever since.
Another option would be to visit the gWave Forum. After you read the TOS, simply engage the forum members with pithy and relevant content and someone should be more than willing to take care of this for you.
If you are an Internet Marketer, you probably already know about the Warrior Forum. If not, you should check it out. It is by far one of the most useful sites on the .Net to get the latest news, info, trends and "how to" stuff I've come across. There are a handful of active threads bantering about this very issue, since a bunch of us think gWave is gonna be a smash hit.
Summary
In my opinion, Google Wave is gonna be a game changer! It will have a similar impact on instant messaging, on-line meetings, real-time collaboration and video sharing in much the same way it did with Google Maps and Google Search. I suspect many of the average quality SaaS provides in these niche markets are shaking in their books, knowing that the gWave is going to be the 800 pound Gorilla in each of these niche markets.

Email Ends, Google Wave Begins - Enjoy Google's Biggest Achievement Ever

Email has some advantages:
... it's free
... it's easy
... everyone uses it so communication using email is universal
Email has some disadvantages:
... it consumes too much time for too little benefit (even though each one seems important)
... organizing and retrieving threads of conversations is cumbersome
... spam is universally hated
... silly or personal emails trot into your inbox right beside important and business emails, with no distinction.
In 2007, Google quietly set about to revolutionize online communication. And, they hired the same two brothers who created the amazing Google Earth. These gurus were given an almost unlimited budget and given creative freedom to create a system of communication online that cures every problem and also adds functions that are currently not only not available but actually not even imagined -- except, of course, by these two Google guru brothers.
The system is called Google Wave. It has some amazing benefits:
... It's free.
... When you are typing a message to someone, they actually see you typing it -- character for character. Usually, the point of the message is clear before the typist hits the send button. With this new system, you can actually reply to the sender's message before the message is finished and before the message is sent. This saves waiting for a message or saves staring at "Mary is typing you a message now".
... There is absolutely no spam because you select the recipients and they approve you. It's more like a club than a universally-open free-for-all which email is today. This is a huge advantage.
... Language translation is part of the system and it works on a keystroke by keystroke basis. So, as you are typing the first word of your message "D e" and you are writing to a friend in France, the translator instantly pops in "Cher" anticipating that you are writing the word "Dear". If you actually keep typing and the word is "Dead", then the translator yanks out "Cher" and pops in "Mort". This happens instantly and seems like magic.
... Following threads of conversations is easy and thoughtfully created.
I'm guessing that Google Wave will clobber Email in the online communication world.

Discover the Follow Friday Ritual

Every Friday something happens in the Twitter world that focuses everybody's attention. Following an idea by Micah Baldwin, it is a way to show that you are proud of your friends and encourage others to follow them.
You don't need to state the reason, you simply need to tweet (put in a short message) their Twitter user names with an ampersand before them and then add the special keyword #followfriday. Note that in Twitter you indicate a keyword (a special subject) by putting the symbol # just before it. It is named an "hash tag" and indicates a subject on which other people also can discuss so that one can view all the messages about that subject gathered together.
So every Friday Twitter is swamped with messages of people recommending their friends or other Twitter users whose messages they found particularly interesting during the week It is a form of saying that you are proud of them and of being connected with them. For example, if you wanted to suggest me you would write a message like "Cool people #followfriday @fratel".
The sum of all suggestions is collected by a special site. http://www.topfollowfriday.com that shows you the highest recommended people of the week and how many people have specifically suggested you. Its is also a good way of returning the favor by suggesting that your followers follow those who have sponsored you. This is not a rule of course, it is up to you to decide what.
Twitter is ultimately for the people, and for their friends and its a very good way to find new ones.

Learn How to Use Twitter For Business - What is FollowFriday and How Do I Get More Followers?

#FollowFriday is like a great BIG party where you tell other Twitter users who you really like and recommend other people to follow.
There are two benefits: 1. you can recommend people that have helped you in some way 2. you can easily build your list of followers by following those recommended by others.
Using Twitter Hash Tags for Categories and Events
Twitter works with something called a # (hash tag), which is a character that is also referred to as a "number sign" or "pound sign", (unless you're British ;).
This symbol is used in front of one or more characters to represent "something", like a category or an event, like a conference.
One of the extremely popular Twitter hash tags is called "#FollowFriday" (used without the quotes) and it is used (almost always) on any Friday in any month.
Each Friday, tons of tweeps (people using "the system") use this hash tag in their tweets to recommend the names of other people that they really like to follow.
Here are some reasons to recommend someone for #FollowFriday:
  • they have unselfishly helped you in some way
  • they have provided great information in their tweets
  • they have provided useful information by providing you with links to web pages
  • they're just a lot of fun to read
Or any other reason you really like someone and want to recommend them!
You can put #FollowFriday anywhere in a tweet and it will be a part of this hash tag (category / event)!
Twitter Training Tips: When you recommend the names of others, be sure to include the @ symbol at the front of the name to make the user name "clickable". This means that when you click on the name, you'll see the Profile page of the person you clicked on. (Don't put a space between the @ sign and the person's name).
So, here are some examples of using this hash tag:
#FollowFriday @joeblow (great tweets) @marismith (excellent Facebook info) @jeffherring (article marketing guy)
In the example above, you can see a reason for the recommendation in the brackets at the right of each name.
This is a really nice way to promote the people you like talking to in Twitter. You can recommend one or more people at a time and you can provide more information (than shown above) on why you recommend someone - or you can just put in the person's name. You can recommend as many people as you want as long as you can fit all of them in the tweet! And you can do as many tweets like this as you want!
However, some people take objection to a long series of tweets with names in them and may unfollow you.
Twitter Training Tips: If you want to make multiple tweet recommendations, provide some other "types" of tweets in between, such as playing a song from blip.fm, putting in a quote of someone you admire, or retweeting a great tweet you've seen!

How to Use 'Follow Friday' Effectively on Twitter to Help Your Followers

Follow Friday is so popular that there is no way you can miss that on Twitter. A lot of people on Twitter do not know how to post one effectively. If you do it the right way, you can help your followers tremendously.

Before we get to that, lets talk about how to do it the wrong way. A lot of people tend to just list a whole bunch of people to follow. If you see a huge list of people you do not know or heard of, would you be curious to find out more about the people that are mentioned? I certainly would not be interested in following bunch of random people on Twitter who I have no idea who they are.

Follow Friday is spammed by almost everyone on Twitter on that one particular day. If yours do not look interesting, most of your followers will overlook it as nothing special. Yours need to stand out to really catch your followers' attention.

How to do it effectively to help your followers on Twitter:

What you can do to really help someone is to pick one person only. You want to write a reason why people should follow this person on Twitter. Here is an example, "#follow friday @username You all need to talk to this guy when it comes to motorcycles. He knows it all!"

People who are interested in motorcycles would most likely add him. This person would appreciate you a lot for making him or her special. They might return the favor later by telling their friends to follow you. Friday is the best day to help your followers out.

Follow my journey to get over 16,000 targeted followers in less than 90 days. My blog will show a log of how I get Twitter followers each day.

Twitter - New Rules For Follow Friday (A Philosophy For Social Media)

I will be the absolute first to admit that I don't like rules. In fact, I hate them. I've always felt that they were unnecessary if people would exercise even the slightest degree of common sense. But, we all know how UN-common common sense it, and it is for that exact reason, that we (unfortunately) NEED to have rules.

Before I just lay down the law and explain the rules, though, I think it's only fair that we give everyone a chance to see exactly why this is just common sense. :)

There Is A Law...

An apple falls from a tree because of the Law of Gravity... there are also laws that govern social media. It's a simple matter of cause & effect: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. "Follow Friday" is an instance where can see Law #7 in action: People just want to be loved.

The Right Way...

Follow Friday is an opportunity to share with our friends the people that we value. We are saying "this is someone that I get value from, and I want you to enjoy what they have to offer as well". It's about sharing, giving and providing value to others.

...and the Wrong Way

Follow Friday is NOT about getting more followers. Some people (either ignorant of the law, or possessing a lack mentality) will recommend as many people as they can for #followfriday in hopes that some of them will feel obligated to reciprocate that gesture. By accomplishing this, they hope that they will attract new followers. Sadly, they just don't get it...

It's about relationships, NOT numbers

100 followers who love & respect you are far more valuable than 10,000 who are not emotionally engaged. Think about it... we all see billboards and magazine ads every day without taking much note, but when a friend recommends a new restaurant or movie, we stop and listen.

This isn't just some hippie-make-love-not-profits idea we're talking about, it's also solid marketing. Every marketer dreams of having their campaign go viral. When people are genuinely interested it automatically grows, even without your help.

Case in point - Did you know that Susan Boyle, of Britain's Got Talent, almost instantly became one of the most popular videos on Youtube... And she had never even heard of youtube! She wasn't trying to get a lot of views, she was just doing what she was passionate about. If you do the same, you'll see similar results... maybe not 1 million followers, but you'll get the ones that see value in what you offer.

Showing Love To Others

Okay, so now that we understand that it's about what we give instead than what we get, let's do it with an A+ effort. What would make you feel more loved:

* #ff @yourname @stranger1 @stranger2 @stranger3 @stranger3 @stranger4 @stranger5 @stranger6
* Friends, check out @yourname an amazing friend of mine who's tweets make me smile every day. #followfriday

Yeah, pretty obvious, huh? Of course you would prefer the 2nd one better. (If not, i've got an #blockparty you can join)

But how do I fit all my friends in?

You don't. That's the point... People feel special when you give them recognition. Nobody wants to be a statistic, they want to be recognized as a valuable individual.

Lumping my name in with 100 people with no explanation of why you recommend me doesn't make me feel special. In fact, it just ticks me off. Can you imagine @SharonHayes' inbox? If all of her 30k+ followers did the #ff spam method, she wouldn't get anything done.

Besides, even if your bulk recommendations are genuine, most people on twitter can't follow that many new tweeps in a day anyway.

Some EXCELLENT examples

These are actual examples that are dead-on the money:

* @TomBeasley #followfriday @AndyGoudling. He is a local radio DJ with a witty sense of humour and an intriguing take on everyday life.
* @TamaraSchilling I Recommend that you #FollowFriday @4thQtrCoach... this man is always upbeat, positive & willing to help you connect & grow! #professional

Go Forth & Multiply (but do it responsibly) That's it... go for it, show love and help make twitter a better place.

If you have a great #followfriday you want to share, feel free to reply to me and I'd love to pass it along! :)

How to Find Online Auto Insurance Quotes

Understanding how to find online auto insurance quotes can be a great way to simplify the often tedious process of obtaining auto insurance. In the same amount of time it once took you to research and contact a single insurance company, now you can find a dozen or more, all only a mouse click away. And the best part? After you have reviewed quotes from as many car insurance companies as you want, you can complete the entire application process online as well!

The first step in finding online auto insurance quotes is to decide whether you prefer to shop by a single insurance company, or to use a website that allows you to compare auto insurance quotes from many different companies at once. If you choose the former, simply use a search engine to locate the website for the individual insurance company. Some popular websites are Progressive.com, Geico.com, and Allstate.com. If you would like to obtain and compare online car insurance quotes from a variety of companies at one time, some good options include: Insurance.com, AutoInsureMe.com, or 2Insure4Less.com.

Once you have decided on a website and would like to obtain an auto insurance quote, you will be required to enter some general information, such as name and address, to begin the application process. Typical applications will then ask for details such as: information on the car(s) you wish to insure, information on the driver(s), facts about any driving-related incidents in your recent past, and what type and amount of coverage you are seeking.

After completing the application, you will be presented with your personalized car insurance quote(s) either by e-mail, or on the website itself. Carefully compare your options, making sure to note all differences in coverage. When you have made your decision, click to contact the insurance company with the quote you choose.

When you speak with a representative from the auto insurance company of your choice, you will need to tell them what date you would like your new auto insurance policy to take effect. It is very important to make sure that you begin your new policy ON OR BEFORE the date that your previous policy expires. Even a single day of gap between coverage of the two policies could result in your having to pay a hefty fine to the state.

Risk Management & Insurance

Risk Management & Insurance are universal and lies at the heart of all economic activities of individuals, businesses and governments. Though effective use of risk management & insurance techniques, we attempt to use our limited economic resources - capital, land and labor - efficiently to further our economic well being. Scientific, technological and managerial developments have afforded us the ability of dealing with many of those risks. It is true that, frequency of loss has been decreasing for many technologically sophisticated processes and activities, but the adverse consequences of losses that do occur have increased. For example, the combined effect of a growth in population, a rise in property density and value, and expanded interactions among people across national boundaries have resulted in higher frequency and severity of catastrophes losses.
